Penned by Eleanor and based on John Cheever’s short story of the same name, The Swimmer follows a wealthy suburban man named Ned Merrill (Lancaster) as he spends a summer afternoon making his way through the swimming pools of his neighbors. Although it received tepid reviews upon release, it has since become a cult classic, with many citing Lancaster’s performance as the best of his career. Originally published in hardcover in 1967.
