Pier Paolo Pasolini: A Future Life. A Cinema of Poetry

Rome: Associazione "Fondo Pier Paolo Pasolini"/Ente Autonomo Gestione Cinema, 1989. 1st Edition. Large quarto, publisher's blank stiff paper wraps, french flaps, original photo-illustrated dust jacket.

Massive compendium of filmstills, production notes, interviews, excerpts from screenplays and other writings – comprising a catalog raisonné of sorts – of the work of legendary Italian poet, filmmaker and intellectual Pier Paolo Pasolini. Born in Bologna the year Mussolini came to power, Pasolini was a precocious poet and aesthete. A self-described Catholic Marxist and a homosexual, he fell afoul of the Fascist government, the Italian Communist Party and the church. He got his start in cinema writing dialogue for Fellini, and soon began writing and directing his own films, recounting the lives of thieves, prostitutes and others on the periphery, in a form of rebuke to entrenched neorealism. By the time of Europe's student riots in the late 1960s, he was seen by some as a reactionary for his sympathies toward the police and disdain for the radicals, many of whom came from the middle classes. He was murdered in 1975, under what remain mysterious circumstances, possibly by the Mafia, possibly for political reasons, possibly in a crime of passion. The present compilation, which includes critical assessments by Alberto Moravia, Enzo Siciliano and the editors, was published under the auspices of Italy's Ministero del Turismo e dello Spettacolo, as part of a "cultural initiative for the recovery, restoration, conservation and multimedia dissemination of [Pasolini's] complete cinema works." Illustrated with numerous black-and-white photos and reproductions. Text in English. Minor creasing to spine and banging to corners; light edgewear to unclipped dust jacket. Near fine. Uncommon.
